Farm History
The farm was originally purchased as a retirement for John Council. He has farmed all of his life. Using the skills and knowledge that he attained from his Dad, the land began to take shape and form into multiple farming operations. Vegetables were grown for the family. Livestock, such as pigs and chickens, were added. Soon, beef cattle and goats were added. Now, we have grass-fed cattle (beef and dairy), chickens, guineas hens, hogs and rabbits who are all pasture raised.
Mr. Council mentored many potential young farmers to take pride in what they are doing and each to work in the area where they do their best. Duties were shared to give everyone a wide range of knowledge in the many aspects of farming. Educating young people in farming is a driving force in him. He constantly seeks ways to improve the farm to make it more efficient without altering the natural ecosystems or disrupting an animal's natural cycle. Our chickens do not receive any artificial lighting to force them to lay eggs during their natural slow times. We do not give growth hormones or over feed our animals to be rushed for the market. We grow the hay for our livestock. Animals such as the hogs are rotated after row crops harvested; such as sweet potatoes. Sweet potatoes is a good source of protein for the hogs.
Mr. Council instills the concept "you are what you eat". He will tell you; "Our vegetables are as good as gold".
